Theory
Unit1: Origin of Dance – according to Bharata’s Natya Sastra
Unit2 : (a) Names of various forms of Indian Classical Dances and their place of origin
(b) As per Nandikeswara’s Abhinaya Darpana – Anga , Upanga, Pratyanga – (Note – Sanskrit names compulsory)
Unit3: Definition of the technical terms :
- Natya, Nritta, Nritya
- Adavu
- Abhinaya
- Utplavana
- Bhramari
- Tandava
- Lasya
Unit4: As per Abhinaya Darpana – names of Asamyutha Hastas with their
Lakshana (formation) and Lakshya (Uses)
(Note – Sanskrit Shloka of the Asamyuta Hastas as per Abhinaya Darpana is compulsory. Shlokas for the Lakshanas and Lakshyas not compulsory)
Unit5: History of Bharatanatyam (Sadir to Bharatanatyam)
Practical
Unit1:
(a) Namaskara Vidhi along with the shlokam
(b) tattu adavu –7 variations
(c) naattu adavu – 6 variations
Unit2:
(a) kutthu adavu / tateitaaha adavu – 6 variations
(b) sarukkal adavu / jaaradavu / teiyaateiyyi adavu – 6 variations
Unit3:
- Taateiteitaa ditteiteitaa adavu – 6 Variations (This includes mardita adavu, veesi adavu and periya adavu)
(b) kuditthu mettu adavu / teihateihi adavu – 6 Variations
Unit4:
(a) mandi adavu – 6 Variations
(b) theermanam adavu – 2 Variations
Unit5:
(a) thatti mettu adavu/ jaathi adavu – 5 Variations
(b) that thei thaam aDavu – 3 Variations (They include Pakkadavu, Shutradavu & Shimiradavu)
Note: All the Adavus should be practiced in all the 3 speeds

(Note – Sanskrit Shloka of the Samyutha Hastas as per Abhinaya Darpana is compulsory. Shlokas for Lakshanas and Lakshyas not compulsory)
Unit 2: A brief study of the various Classical Dance forms of India.
Unit 3: As per Nandikeswara’s Abhinaya Darpana:
- Siro Bheda
- Greeva Bheda
- Devata hastas
- Nrtta hastas
Unit 4: Tala system in carnatic music – the system of 35 Talas
Unit 5: Alarippu, Jatisvaram, Shabdam with illustration
Practical
Unit 1: Alarippu – Roopaka Tala
Unit 2: Jati Swaram
Unit 3: Shabdam
Unit 4: Any Kauthvam
Unit 5: The system of 35 Talas (includes Sapta Talas, Tala Angas, Jaathi)
Note: The students appearing for the exam are expected to sing the song to talam and also render the Jatis, if any, to talam. They are also required to know the word-to-word meaning of the sahityam.
