CERTIFICATE COURSE
FIRST YEAR – THEORY
Section – A
- Definitions and explanations of : Sangeet, Swar, Shudda, Vikrut, Komal, tivra, Saptak, Mandra, Saptak, Madhya-Saptak, Tar-Saptak, Aroha, Avroha, Varja Swar, Alankar.
- Comprehension of the following terminology:
Matra, Tal, Vibhag, Sam, Tali, Khali, Bols of thekas, Dugun, Chougun and Avarthan.
- Talas to be taught – Teental, jhaptal, dadra and ektal with its complete description .
Section – B
- To write simple swaras and alankaras prescribed for this year.
- knowledge of twenty (20) Pardas (frets) on baaj -ka-taar
III. Complete description of the prescribed talas with their thekas
( as laid down under section B Practicals)
- Complete description of the prescribed ragas with details.
FIRST YEAR – PRACTICAL
Section – A
- Correct Manner of holding and placement of the insturment.
Common sitting position for gents and ladies, cross -legged position suggested.
- Mijrab – correct way of wearing it.
III. Correct right hand movement to produce the bols da, ra and dira
- Proper position and fingering of left hand
- Practice of left hand exercises to develop correct fingering in kalyan and bilawal thaats.
- Production and recognition of Shudda – Vikrut Swaras on baaj -ka- taar.
VII. Practice of fifteen basic exercises (alankaras)
VIII. Ability to demonstrate talas on hand and counting of matras and bols in the prescribed talas.
Section – B
- Maseet Khani gats in madhya laya with five taans in dugun –
laya in each of the following prescribed ragas:
- Raag Yaman R. Raag Khamaj 3. Raag Kafi 4. Raag Bhupali
- Rab Alhaiya bilawal 6. Rag Brindavani Sarang
- Prescribed Talas are :
1.Teentaal 2. Jhaptal 3. Choutal 4. Dadra.
This year’s teaching is mainly to impart intensive training of
Sitar fundamentals, like proper handling of the instrument,
correct positions of right and left hands and sitting position.
The student should develop correct hand movement and correct fingering.

SECOND YEAR – THEORY
Section – A
- Nad- its three qualities: Pitch, Magnitude and timbre
- Definitions and explanations of :
Shruti, Swarasthan (Mandra, Madhya, Tar), Varna, Alankar, Pakad, Vakra Swar, Thaat and rag.
III. Definitions and explanations of :
Sthayee, Antara, Sanchari, Abhog, Laya, Vilambit, Madhya Laya and Drut, Vadi, Samvadi, Anuvadi, Vivadi.
- Definitions of :
Graha, Amsha, Nyas, Meend, Kan, Taan, Alap dugun, Chougun
Section – B
- To write the particulars and usage of the strings in the sitar
- To write notation of Vilambit and drut gats with taans in the prescribed ragas.
III. Complete description of the talas prescribed for the year.
SECOND YEAR – PRACTICAL
Section – A
- Recongnition of Suddha and vikrut swaras while they are being played.
- Four advanced exercises.
III. Exercises of bolkar used in Vilambit and drutgats.
- simple Jhala exercises
- Ability to show the talas on hand along with the recitations of their bols.
- Recogntion of prescribed talas when played on tabla.
Section – B
- Vilambit gats of the following prescribed ragas with five taans in chougun laya.
- Raag Yaman 2. Raag Khamaj 3. Raag Kafi 4. Raag Bhupali
- Raag Brindavani Sarang 6.Raag Alhaiya Bilwal 7. Raag Durga
- Dhrut gats in each of the following ragas with five taans in dugun laya.

III. The following prescribed talas with thekas:
- Ektal 2. Dhamar 3. Sultal 4. Keherva
By the end of second year overall perfection of the basics and Fundamentals of sitar is expected. The Student must be able to play all the basic alankars perfectly with correct fingering. He should develop perfect laya to play the alankaras and gats. And should imporve speed to play taans and Jhala.
The basic knowledge of the instrument sitar and its playing is expected from the students.

THIRD YEAR – THEORY
Section – A
- The nine jathis of ragas (audav, Shadav, Sampurna)
- Definitions and explanations of :
Suddha, Chhayalag, Sankirna ragas, purva rag, Uttara rag, poorvanga , vadi, Ashraya raaga.
III. Study of the ancient method of singing ragas with reference
to graha, amsha, and nyas in comparison with that of the present one.
- Time theory of raga.
Section – B
- Definitions and explanations of :
Krintan, ZamZama, ghaseet, andolan, layakari, meend
- Forms of compositions played on sitar
III. To wirte the gat in notations in the ragas prescribed for the year, and also to write the bols for the gats along with chougun and dugun laya taans.
- the complete description of the tals prescribed for the year and also to write the theka in the thah and dugun.
CERTIFICATE COURSE – THIRD YEAR – PRACTICAL
Section – A
- Knowledge and practice of tuning the sitar
- Practice of exercises in drut laya
III. Simple usage of meend, Kanswar, krintan, while playing gats.
- Practice of different types of jhalas.
- Alankaras of meend and krintan
- Ability to show talas on hand by reciting the bols in thah and dugun prescribed for the year in addition to those learnt in the previous years.
VII. Recognition of talas when being played on tabla.
Section – B
- Simple alaps in the following ragas.
- Raag Bageshri 2. Raag Bhimplasi 3. Raag Malkauns
- Vilambit gats (maseetkhani)with five taans in chougun in each of the following ragas.
- Raag Hamer 2. Raag Bageshri 3. Raag Malkanus 4. Raag Bhimplasi 5. Raag Bhairav
- Raag Asawari
III. Drut gats (razakhani) with five taans in dugun in each of the following ragas.
- Raag Hamer 2. Raag Bageshri 3. Raag Malkhanuns 4. Raag Bhimpalasi 5. Raag Bhairav
- Raag Asawari
- The following talas are prescribed along with thekas in addi tion to the talas learnt previously.
- Tilwada 2. Deepchandi 3. Teevra and all the talas prescribed in the previous years.
This year’s training is imparted for proper rendering of the prescribed ragas talas and maintaining the purity of raga. Use of correct bolkari while playing gats. The student is expected to play simple meend accurately and to acquire the ability to use simple krintan and kanswaras, Further he should have complete knowledge to recognise all the ragas and talas learnt in the previous years.

CERTIFICATE COURSE – FOURTH YEAR – THEORY
Section – A
- Complete description of the 72 melakartas of Pandit Venktamahki and to evolve them with 12 swaras of Hindustani music by mathematical process
- Complete explanation of the 10 thaats of Hindustani music and process of evoloving ragas out of the parental scale.
III. Comparative study of Samprakrutik ragas.
Section – B
- Definitions and explanations of:
gamak, alap – jor (jodalap)- Jodjhala, andolan, bol-kari, and layake – prakar
- To write the vilambit and drut gats with bolkari and five taans in each gat, in chougun and dugun respectively.
III. Complete description of the ragas prescribed for the year.
- To wirte the prescribed tals with their scientific details in thah and dugun, in addition to the tals learnt in the previous years.
- Biographies of Pandit V.N. Bhatkhande and Pt. V.D.Paluskar.
CERTIFICATE COURSE – FOURTH YEAR – PRACTICAL
Section – A
- Knowledge and practice of tuning the sitar according to ragas.
- Knowledge of tuning the taraf strings according to the raga.
III. Knowledge of bolkari for different forms fo compostion
- Knowledge and practice of the ragas and talaas prescribed in the previous years.
- Ability to play alankars in the following thaats.
- Kalyan 2. Kafi 3. Bhairav 4. Bhairavi
- Ability to play simple extempore alaps in the prescribed ragas and also in the ragas learnt in the previous years.
VII. Knowledge and practice to use chikari strings while playing alap, Vilambit and Drut gats.
VIII. To demonstrate the prescribed talas on hand in thah and dugun in addition to the talas learnt in the previous years.
Section B
- Alaps in the following ragas:
- Bihag 2. Des 3. Kedar
- Vilambit gats with five taans in Chougun in each of the following ragas.
- Tilak kamod 2. Bihag 3. Des 4. Kedar 5. Sohini 6. Jounpuri
III. Drut gats with five taans in dugun and jhala
- Tilak kamod 2. Bihag, 3. Des 4. Kedar 5. Sohini 6. Joun puri.
- The following talas are prescribed along with thekas
- Rupak tal 2. Ada-choutal and all the talas prescribed on the previous years.
The student is expected to play simple alap in the ragas prescribed for the third and fourth years. The should beable to play gats with correct bolkari and maintaining the purity of the raag, futher he should be able to recognise thebols and matras while played on Tabla. He is also expected to have complete knowledge and sense of recognition ofthe raagas and talas learnt so far, and he should possess good sense of raag, tal and laya.
